Greenhouses and Vegetable Garden

GreenhouseWe have constructed two greenhouses on the property for propagation of our heirloom vegetable plants and annuals. The smaller one attached to the garage is the starter greenhouse, which is used in late winter for seedlings which were started in the basement under grow lights. The plants are late moved into the larger house which also operates as a sales area in the spring.

The vegetable garden extends to the back of the property where the orange fences are currently seen. A development known as "Walkup at the Park" is nearing completion on what was a portion of the original Walkup property and farm. The Flowering Peas wooden stakes holding up the peas and beans were original beams from a portion of the roof of the house which was raised somewhat by the previous owners. The raised beds contain tomatoes, peppers and eggplant, which are grown in soil brought in from elsewhere due to concerns over the walnut residue in the soil on the property which is particularly harmful to that family of plants.

The back portion of the garden, which covers almost an acre, is devoted to larger crops such as corn, pumpkin, squash, melons, cucumbers and beans. These are being grown on slightly raised beds in semi "Indian" fashion known as the "Three Sisters" (corn, squash and beans) with all three being planted together. All are "heirloom" varieties not generally available elsewhere.

Finally, the native plants and heirloom roses are located in the hoop house which returns you to the barn. Plants in the hoop house and in the large greenhouse are available for sale as are the herbs in the Sunken Garden. A portion of the proceeds of any sales will go to the sponsors of this walk.

Vegetables will able be available in season so please come and try some! Thank you for taking the "virtual" walking tour of Walkup Heritage Farm & Gardens. Please visit us soon.
